Mission Statement, History and Description
The Human Powered Submarine (HPS) team at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is a group of approximately twenty science, engineering, and business students committed to creating a competitive submarine for the International Submarine Races. Throughout the school year, our students make time in their academic studies and social lives to design, fabricate, and test a new submarine design for the summer competitions.
The team allows our students to learn to work well with their engineering peers and to discover their own leadership potential. As a student-run team, we elect our own leaders and they set schedules and get valuable experience in managing a complex project with lots of moving parts. The team shoulders the burden of mistakes together and works together to overcome setbacks as a group regardless of individual responsibilities, which makes sharing in the successes that much sweeter.
